These are two world-famous female figures who have built up an image, an illusion, to ensure their survival. The gods hide Helen in Egypt, while Paris removes a cloud that has her appearance. Norma Jeane builds her own myth, Marilyn Monroe is the Hollywood star par excellence.
But are these two women just an illusion? In any case, they are the object of desire. They trigger the desire for domination and possession and lead to wars. They are the most valuable commodity, the casus belli and the trophy of war.
Anne Carson uses these two legendary figures to tell us the story of all women.
