“A Short Diary” is a diary of loss, a tribute to Aberdeen poet Gerard Rochford and a very intimate collaboration between two phenomenal musicians: Sebastian Rochford and Kit Downes.

Described by The Guardian as "a phenomenal, dynamic, imaginative. An outstanding pianist."
Abel Marcel is a musical mastermind and a passionate thinker. A pianist, composer, educator and independent researcher active across multiple musical communities has built himself an identity as a singular and versatile voice, and shape-shifting figure in 21st century music. He has been praised by the Music Republic Magazine as "equally at home with the european and american jazz traditions as he is with his own cuban roots"
Abel's musical language stood and stands for continued fresh and thrilling exploration on steady ground of and deep rootedness in the rhythmic traditions of the Caribbean and Afro Caribbean, the Cuban creative music movement of the 50s and 70s (Renovación Musical), and the lineage of composer-pianists from A tireless collaborator, and dance lover he has written music for the choreographers Jan Likens and the ballet start Carlos Acosta, joined forces with musicians such as Yuri Buenaventura, David Murray, Changuito, Saul Williams, Nasheet Waits, Jorge Reyes, Ramses Rodriguez, Eric Revis.

Sebastian Rochford is Gerard’s son. Well known as the bandleader of Polar Bear and for his many years of collaboration with Acoustic Ladyland, Andy Sheppard and the legendary Songs of Kemet, he has also toured with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and Patti Smith, among others.

With “A Short Diary” he presents an emotionally charged album with his own piano compositions. Memories set to music, born out of the need for consolation. “Seb” is one of ten siblings and wrote most of the music shortly after Gerard’s death. He recorded it with BBC Jazz Award-winning Kit Downes. It is thoughtful, wistful, intimate and of hymn-like clarity. These are unbearably sad yet beautiful tracks. Especially the second single “Even Now I Think Of Her”, a melody that Sebastian Rochford’s father sang into his phone and sent to his son.

Released in January 2023, "A Short Diary" is touching, musically brilliant and of impossibly honest quality. A diary that will leave no listener cold.
