Welcome to an exceptional concert with Machine à trois (Mà3), a percussive chamber music ensemble. Formed by Pascal Meyer, Rachel Xi Zhang and Laurent Warnier, Mà3 offers a unique combination of three instruments from the keyboard family: piano, marimba and vibraphone.
Their performances blend the sounds of struck piano strings, wood and metal blades, creating music that ranges from dreamy soundscapes to rhythmic grooves. A truly extraordinary experience!
For Unlearn, in addition to the trio's original compositions, five renowned musicians from the world of jazz have been invited to write works in close collaboration with the trio. They are pianists Kirke Karja, Franz von Chossy and Michel Reis, multi-instrumentalist Pol Belardi and conductor and saxophonist Luise Volkmann.
The sonic result promises to be an exciting mix of contemporary classical music inspired by jazz, with post-minimalist and experimental influences reminiscent of impressionist soundscapes.

Pascal Meyer (Piano): A long-standing member of the Luxembourg contemporary music ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin, he has recorded Karlheinz Stockhausen's ‘Mantra’ with pianist Xenia Pestova Bennett and the complete works for two keyboards by John Cage for NAXOS. For him, Machine à trois represents everything that schools did not teach him and everything that his former classical chamber music ensembles were not: a platform for experimenting with composition, playing non-classical repertoire and finding bridges to tradition while adapting it.

Laurent Warnier (Vibraphone): Living between Luxembourg and Amsterdam, he devotes much of his time to researching and creating new repertoire for the marimba and vibraphone - adding a piano was the next logical step in his work. Equally interested in baroque music and electroacoustic experimentation, Machine à trois provides him with a fertile creative playground. An active freelance musician and member of the electroacoustic music duo Plastiklova, Laurent currently teaches percussion at the Conservatoires de Musique de Luxembourg and Amsterdam.

Rachel Xi Zhang (Marimba): Having spent much of her youth studying piano in Shenzhen, China, she developed a taste for unconventional pitches and timbres by banging on random objects during her rebellious youth. She found peace by touching a marimba. The vibrancy of her sound can best be described as rooted in the classical music of an earlier era, but etched with characteristics derived from her many collaborations with composers of her generation. As well as being an international soloist and clinician, she teaches marimba at the Amsterdam Conservatory.
