Rich, powerful, colourful, exciting and highly evocative. Ahmed’s most ambitious and most successful work to date has the feel of a ‘major statement’ about it. - thejazzmann.com
'Polyhymnia', is the third highly anticipated album by Anglo-Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, released in October 2019 on Ropeadope Records. The work conveys a universal message about history and the growing empowerment of women and includes many tributes to notable women in history: Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, Ruby Bridges, Haifa Al-Mansour... 'Polyhymnia', rich in musical images, explores their history and their struggles and triumphs, evoking universal human concepts of forgiveness, oppression, hope...
Through her music Yazz Ahmed seeks to blur the boundaries between jazz and electronica, blending the sounds of her heritage with what has been described as "psychedelic, intoxicating and eloquent Arabic jazz". Her career has been interspersed with high-level collaborations with artists such as Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, Joan as Police Woman... Recently, she played as a soloist and composer with Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Her second album 'La Saboteuse' (2017, Naim Records) attained worldwide recognition, being selected by The Wire magazine as Jazz Album of the Year and 18th in the Bandcamp Top 100 Albums (all genres).
